How to Choose the Right Cycling Helmet Size

A practical measurement and fit-check process for adults, children and group buyers choosing a cycling helmet.

Start with a head measurement, not a guessed size

The most reliable starting point is the rider’s head circumference in centimetres. Use a flexible measuring tape and place it around the widest part of the head, usually about one to two centimetres above the eyebrows, above the ears and around the most prominent part at the back of the head. Keep the tape level and comfortably close to the skin without pulling it tight.

Take the measurement at least twice. When two readings differ, repeat the process and use the largest consistent measurement. Hair style, thick headwear and an angled tape can produce misleading results.

Use the exact model’s size chart

A label such as small, medium or large is not universal. One manufacturer’s medium can overlap with another brand’s small or large. Match the measurement to the published chart for the exact helmet model being offered.

When the measurement sits at the boundary between sizes, consider the manufacturer’s guidance, the adjustment range and the rider’s intended use. A helmet should not depend on being forced tight at the end of its adjustment range.

Position the helmet correctly

Place the helmet level on the head. It should cover the forehead rather than sit high or tilt backward. A practical check is that the front edge is approximately one or two finger widths above the eyebrows, subject to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Use the rear retention system to stabilise the helmet. The fit should be secure without painful pressure points. With the straps open, gently move the helmet from side to side and front to back. Excessive movement indicates that the size or adjustment may be wrong.

Adjust the side and chin straps

The side straps should meet in a V shape around each ear without rubbing the ear. Fasten the chin buckle and tighten it so that the strap is secure but comfortable. As a simple check, there should be limited space between the strap and chin; always follow the model instructions.

Check the fit under real riding conditions

Wear the helmet for several minutes. Look for pressure points, slipping, blocked vision or interference with eyewear. Riders using a thin cycling cap should check fit with the cap they actually intend to wear, provided the helmet manufacturer permits it.

Special considerations for children

Do not choose a child’s helmet by age alone. Children of the same age can have different head measurements. Recheck the fit regularly as the child grows, and ensure an adult confirms the position and straps before each ride.
